2010 Monastrell, Bodegas Castano, Yecla, Spain

Ramon Castaño Santa, and his 3 sons created Bodegas Castaño in the 1970’s. While it is still a family-run operation, it is by no means small. Initially the vineyards were planted entirely of Monastrell and Garnacha but were slowly restructured and planted with other varieties. Today, the estate is 350 hectares of vineyards, in 3 zones, which are geographically and characteristically different. The two vineyards located in the North are called Pozuelo and Las Gruesas (700m elevation) and one to the South in the zone is named Espinal (600m elevation). Yecla is known for its warm climate with high levels of sunshine throughout the year. Castano owns some of the highest vineyard parcels in the zone, with many over 700 meters in altitude, located in the northern reaches of the D.O. The soil is primarily made up of limestone in the North and clay in the low lying South.

This vibrant young red Bodegas Castano’s unoaked 2010 Monastrell (100%) is a glass-coating opaque purple color. Asian spices, incense, black fruits and chocolate compose the nose of this juicy, fruity, plush offering. Lengthy on the palate and well-balanced, this outstanding value will provide enjoyment for another 3-4 years.

Wine Tastings

The best way to purchase fine wines is to taste them first. For that reason, we taste every wine before we put it on the shelf. We strongly suggest that our customers come to our monthly wine tastings so they can taste before they buy. Most of our store wine tastings are actually mini wine tasting classes at no charge. These tastings, led by Michael, are primarily centered on a coherent theme that can range from regions to holidays. At our wine tastings, we discuss the similarity and differences between the wines. Sometimes we taste the same varietal from different regions or different types of wines, all from the same area. Three times a year, we have “Grand Wine Tastings”. At these events, we have about 35 different wines available to be tasted at a half dozen different stations. Each station is manned by industry professionals who are well acquainted with the wines on their table.
