2009 Viura-Chardonnay
Vega Sindoa, Navarra, Spain
Viura, also called Macabeo, is one the principal varieties used in the production of Spanish Sparkling wine, “Cava”. When used in still wine, the grape shows best when blended with grapes that are fatter and/or sweeter. Hence this Viura – Chardonnay blend is a natural winner.
The 2009 Vega Sindoa Viura-Chardonnay is 75% Viura and 25% Chardonnay. The wine is made from remarkably low yields for this price level, perhaps accounting for its superb concentration. Light gold in color, it offers up an attractive nose with notes of mineral, baked apple, and honey. Supple on the palate with gobs of flavor, this medium-bodied wine is nicely balanced and refreshing. It is also a great value.
